At the ELIXIR BioHackathon Europe 2025, I worked with @albangaignard and we have some suggestions for the Organization profile, currently at 0.3-DRAFT. (Note, I tried to add a GitHub label to tag the Organizations group but could not see one.)

  • Change marginality of properties
    • sameAs: from minimum to recommended
    • legalName: from minimum to recommended
    • topic: from minimum to recommended
  • rdf:type: should be removed, we already have @type
  • @id: its description should recommend ROR as the URI (example https://ror.org/027m9bs27)

Motivation

From observing the GTN training materials, these three properties are not being used anyway, they are not always known or required in the context they are being used. For example, GTN lists the organizations that its trainers are members of (their employer). The person who creates a training material does not know or care what the legal name of their organization is, and this could be looked up via the ROR if provided. The topic of the organization does not make sense here, as the training materials may have topics, and the organization likely supports far more topics than we would include here. We do not know all the organizations this one is the same as (there could be many or none), and it is better to use ROR where it exists than the Wikipedia URL of the organization.

The motivation to include the ROR as the identifier is to better support knowledge graph querying. If each entity has a URI, for organizations to use ROR.org, we can better understand which orgs are the same.
