Steps to reproduce the bug

1. Download the ZIP file jxl32samples.zip and unzip it
2. Save the folder "jxl32samples" either in Internal Storage or MicroSD Card
3. Open Fossify Gallery and scroll until the "jxl32samples" album shows up
4. The app will freeze (become unresponsive) and the album preview will display later or not at all ("fail to load media")
5. Select that "jxl32samples" album
6. The images won't load their previews instantly and the app becomes unresponsive again. The images will either display their previews much later or not at all ("fail to load media")
7. Select any image from the "jxl32samples" folder (sample1.jxl, sample2.jxl, etc.)
8. Again, the app becomes unresponsive and the image will load much later or not at all ("fail to load media")

Expected behavior

Load the album preview, the images previews and the images themselves correctly without the app becoming unresponsive

Actual behavior

The album preview, the images previews and the images themselves make the app unresponsive and won't display after much later or not at all ("fail to load media")

Additional information

1. The JPEG XL images have 32 bit float format with Rec. 2020 color space
2. Said images were transcoded using the reference libjxl 0.11.1
3. The images metadata (specifically EXIF) won't display at all

Do menu options, swiping, navigation, etc., still work?

Note that some delay when loading large images or multiple images at the same time is expected.

Nothing works at all, sadly. It completely freezes.

Now, my processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 (which is known for being slow) so that can partially explain the delay.

On my devices, the attached images do fail at first, but they all eventually load after a couple of tries. I did not notice any freezing or unresponsive behavior on Redmi Note 11 (SD 680) and others.

Maybe this will be reproducible with more similar images (I'll try later).

• Do you have extended details enabled? If yes, does it make any difference if you disable it?

That's strange. I checked one more time in my Redmi Note 13 4G and the gallery actually crashed. It sucks that I don't fully know why.

The label is just to reflect the issue state, but yes, more information (recordings, etc.) is always helpful.

The clear data/storage button in the system app info is all you need to completely reset the app.

It doesn't make a difference, sadly. I clear cache, data and uninstalled the app to install it again from GitHub, but even when extended details were disabled, the bug persists.

I added a Screen Recording that shows up the bug. Ironically, now that I record it it displays the album preview correctly. The images themselves and their previews didn't though.

Perfectly understandable. Don't worry, I'm not demanding a fix right away. This app is awesome as it is and JPEG XL is relatively new, so 32 bit float JXL files not displaying correctly makes perfect sense.
