$exception event is not processed on self-hosted

Bug Description

In a very strange way, the $exception event is not being processed on self-hosted. Both when sent via the React SDK and directly, it returns "status": "Ok". However, it doesn’t appear in the PostHog interface. Do you have any idea what could be causing this?

having same problem as well on my self-hosted instance (latest version). Any other events are being captured fine but not the $exception ones.

Hey!

David here from the error tracking team. In all honesty we haven't been able to put a bunch of time into making the self-hosted version of PostHog work of late. I took some time this evening to test it out and realised that we're not even starting cymbal (a separate service we use to process $exception events) in the Docker compose file.

I added what should work in #41841 but haven't been able to successfully test it yet because of some issues with Kafka ports. If you're interested it should be relatively easy to apply those changes in your Docker Compose files, I'd be curious if you manage to get it working and it's just an issue with Kafka on the latest tag
