Citing Data
Goals and Summary
The Austrailan Geoscience Datacube http://nci.org.au/virtual-laboratories/earth-observation/australian-geoscience-data-cube/ holds large volumes of raster data from earth observation satellites. These can be subsetted into spatially bounded time series. The process of subsetting these data does not conform with the current data DOI citation paradigm of stable digital objects.
Why is it important and to whom?
- With increasing volumes of earth observation data, ways have to be found to cite subsets of these very large data sets.
- This case is important to operators of large data collections of raster data time series, e.g. in earth observation.
Why hasn’t it been solved yet?
- The current DOI paradigm is aimed at indivitual digital objects, or collections of digital objects. In this use case we are not looking at identifyin individual satellite scenes, but at compilations from multiple scenes in space and time.
