Reading GPIO in I2C mode #32

I'm using an FT232H for a project, and was hoping to use some of the GPIOH pins as inputs while using the I2C mode of the MPSSE, but it appears that I can only use the 4 GPIOL pins. Is there a work around to read the GPIOH pins? I can get by with only reading them about every second or two and my I2C device has enough buffer to wait, so if it requires changing modes, I can live with that, but would prefer not to.
If I do need to change modes, what is the most efficient way of doing so?
