For new term requests, please provide the following information:

Hi! I was wondering if the following terms would be in scope for OBA. They is some overlap with the abnormal emotional branch state in the HPO, but the suggested terms are not always abnormal and may fit for OBA. If so, I'm happy to provide more detailed definitions and sources.

1. quality of guilt behavior - a feeling of inner turmoil based on a judgement of responsibility for an unfavorable outcome
2. quality of anger behavior - inner feelings of resentment that may be in response to an action or statement by others that is perceived to be a slight or challenge to the person regardless of the nature of

These definitions are based on the current working definition for the terms in the HPO generated by Dr. Melvin McInnis.

You say behaviour, but then define as emotion (two quite different things). Are you asking for:

1. quality of guilt-driven behaviour
2. quality of guilty emotional state

or both?

Can you also give an example of how these terms will be used? like "taking lorezapam has no effect on the quality of guilty emotional state"?

Initially, my thought was to add terms including "guilt", "irritability", and "anger" since we're working on parallel terms in HPO. When I saw that irritability already existed and was worded like "irritability behavior quality" and an exact synonym is "quality of irritability behavior", I tried to keep the additional terms I was requesting in the same format.

@ehurwitz these sound like emotional states, not exactly like phenotypes; but I see how they can be important to some mental health use cases. I don't know how to best deal with these in the context of HPO and OBA tbh.

Are "guilt behavior" and "anger behavior" biological processes or something else?
You need to provide existing component terms for "guilt behavior" and "anger behavior" defined in a scientific domain-appropriate external ontology/ontologies like NBO or GO so that we can proceed and define "quality of guilt behavior" and "quality of anger behavior" in OBA. I am afraid we can not define behavioural or emotional processes, nor emotional states in OBA 😿.

For example, take a look at the "Equivalent to" logical definition of OBA:1000400 irritability behavior quality: it uses an NBO term, NBO:0000128 irritability behavior which had already been defined in NBO before we could create the trait term in OBA.

Again, "guilt behavior", "anger behavior", "feeling guilty" or "feeling anger" need to be defined outside OBA before we may be able to assign trait terms to these.

I am not expecting many scientific studies on 'feeling guilty' in model organisms, but do you have examples of population-based (GWAS) or other human genetic studies that use these categories as observed characteristics of study subjects published in a peer-reviewed paper?
Does an interoperable and re-usable definition of any of 'guilt behavior,' 'anger behavior,' 'feeling guilty,' or 'feeling anger' exist somewhere in textbooks or peer-reviewed publications? Evidence for an interoperable definition would constitute more than one peer-reviewed scientific publication (with non-overlapping sets of authors) where it is described how these processes or emotional states can be observed (ideally measured) and interpreted following the consensus definition in an objective way. By objective, I mean that the interpretation of the observations would not depend on the subjective opinion of a handful of authority figures.
Some sort of 'emotional state quality' terms might be created in PATO as a placeholder for these instead of creating new (biological/psychological/social) process terms, but the definition of those terms would not be trivial to make them interoperable and useful in biology (which is the primary focus of OBA) or biological aspects of mental health.

To give a bit of background, we're working on the abnormal emotional state branch in HPO and the 3 terms "irritability", "anger", and "guilt", let to a bit of discussion and prompted @mellybelly to note OBA contains normal behavioral traits and suggest adding these terms to OBA. @rays22 I very much appreciate the points you made so just wanted to double check @mellybelly this would align with your thinking as well?
