With Metabase 54, it looks like:

ClickHouse and Starburst are now officially supported
These databases now have full official support from the Metabase team, including unlimited technical help. That means more reliability, faster fixes, and peace of mind. Bonus: the Starburst driver also works with Trino.

Could you please clarify what it means for this metabase driver and its future? Is it still required? Is their driver the same as this one?

just discovered that in the official version of driver in metabase v54 onwards, impersonation is always disabled

Hello @mattiamatrix this is correct, v54 makes Starburst a Metabase official driver. In our collaboration with Metabase the guidance is that bug reports and feature requests should be opened on the main Metabase repository. Metabase is also retaining the original Starburst driver on v53 in case a customer requires a downgrade. We at Starburst need to update our internal documentation to reflect this change. In terms of functionality, anonymous logging has been added but there is Metabase logic that replaces the previous Starburst impersonation feature. In Metabase, impersonation uses a user attribute and it set per group.
