I'd love to be able to declare that only requests originating from local IPs (192.x, 172.x, etc) should be allowed to register a new account! I want to use google oauth for accounts instead of dealing with usernames/passwords, but right now it would be a manual process to expand the whitelist when a friend or family member decides to join up.
By separating access IP ranges and registration IP ranges you can restrict who actually can sign up (only people on my network, presumably trusted to register) without restricting who can access (those users who signed up can now access it from elsewhere without manual intervention of whitelisting them first)
