Thread persistence

It would be really nice if Claude Code Zed threads persisted in the same way that native ones did, so that you could go back and look at them. At the moment, it feels very ephemeral and easy to lose your work. What are the technical blockers to achieving this?

@lukemarsden there are some people looking into this, but the SDK doesn't provide a great way to retrieve all existing sessions, but we'll take another look with the recent updates. For sure this request definitely makes sense!

@benbrandt Ah, is this the same as what I see?

My focus was on the Agent Panel during an in-depth session with Claude Code. After typing a substantial amount of text in a prompt, I wanted to quickly save another thought in a new empty Zed file. So, I hit cmd-n, and suddenly, I started a new session in the Agent Panel, losing my context and prompt. I didn't see how to get back to the Claude Code history.

I should try to get rid of the cmd-n keybinding in AgentPanel since I've done this three times now!

Why not store the threads in zed rather than relying on the backend for persistence?

Because the agent may have state required to resume that isn't just the chat representation over ACP
Since it is a design decision that the ACP representation isn't necessarily the same as the agent's own representation, to allow for flexibility for agent authors, it really needs to be owned by the agent

For example: post /compact in multiple agents they can handle this differently, and we can't necessarily reconstruct the state based on the UI state

The claude agent sdk is improving so we can definitely revisit this topic as we know it is super important for everyone

Having the ability to save threads and resume previous ones would really transform my use of Claude Code in Zed. I really want this feature!

i am working on an opencode acp and wonder how i can list all sessions/threads? the opencode SDK does provide a method to list them all https://opencode.ai/docs/sdk/#sessions

@benbrandt from you comment it would seem that Zed is capable of taking in a list of threads/sessions?

I think ACP still needs a better way to list all sessions, which is in progress. Zed does not support it at the moment

Any update on this? The feature I'm planning to build depends on this. At the moment, it looks completely deadlocked.
